New Antinatalism Forum

http://antinatalism.freeforums.net/

The guy running this forum is a friend of mine from Twitter, one of the only guys I know who'll patiently indulge my ramblings in the wee hours before I return to my coffin at daybreak (or thereabouts). He's thoughtful, funny, quick with the wit and just plain interested in various subjects that touch on our shared existential dilemma, AND he's recently learned to microwave killer cornbread! So come, fellow antinatalists, come post with us, won't you?

Microwave cornbread? Sacrilege! A toaster oven is much better.

Take care Raúl

Yeah, toaster oven IS better, but man, the microwave cooks it in 4 minutes, so it's sort of a situational thing, time constraints et al. My rule of thumb is that if I'm eating it by itself it gets the full gourmet treatment. But if it's going on the bottom of a soupbowl...nuke it!

Señor Jim,
I hope you have nice and quiet days and a calm 2016. Take care. Raul from Paraguay

I suffer from bipolar depression and anxiety so it is easy for me to wish I had never been born. But my antinatalist position is rocked somewhat by the realization that by far most people are not suffering the way I do and most are not enduring any major suffering such as cancer or torture. In fact the vast majority of people don't go through major suffering. So sometimes I wonder about antinatalism.

"In fact the vast majority of people don't go through major suffering. So sometimes I wonder about antinatalism." This doesn't change the fact that there is nothing inferior about non-existence. When you're asleep, is that inferior to being awake? Do people sit around being sad about their unborn relatives? Once we exist we're at risk, period. I've known people who had nearly perfect lives, until they were diagnosed with terrible forms of cancer. I'm talking about people who never smoked, drank, or did anything other than be alive before they became completely consumed by illness.

Ron, especially since I suffer from depression and anxiety myself, this is most definitely not written in any spirit of rudeness. But tell us something. Are/were your parents among the happy people you mentioned in your comment? If so, don't you imagine they thought you would also turn out happy and glad to be alive? Get my drift?

What a wonderful gift this child was given by his parents, the gift of life. He was in such a terrible state of non-existence before being born.

Ron, I get your point and think you're being reasonable, but you may be surprised just how many people suffer the same or worse. Suffering is not a competition, but it is the underlay of all life. In different ways, at different levels, but always there.

At least they were given the gift of life.

Antinatalism is the ultimate thankless philosophy. Obviously, potential people never coming into existence (and the number is potentially trillions)won't thank you.

David Bowie passing reminded me of a thought I started to have, after a certain point in my life. Maybe after 40 or so? It's not something I see mentioned much, even in these circles. When people die, I not only feel sad, but also a bit jealous. Does anyone else ever feel this?

Yes, Hugh. Especially if it wasn't an agonized, paroxysm-laden departure.

I SUFFER FROM SEVER BIPOLAR DEPRESSION AND ALSO A VERY SECVER ANXZIETY DISORDER. I CERTAINLY WISH I. HAD NEVER BEEN BORN. BUT THE PEOPLE I SEE OUT IN PUBIC ARE NOT SUFFERING THE WAY I DO, AT LEAST NOT THE VAST MAJORITY OF THEM. MOST SEEM FAIRLY HAPPY AND I IMAGINE MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD FEEL FAIRLY HAPPY OR AT LEAST ALRIGHT. WHO AM I TO TELL THEM THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF NEVER HAVING BEEN BORN. I GUESS I AM AN ON THE FENCE ANTINATALIST BECAUSE I BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY MORE HAPPY PEOPLE THAN MISERABLE PEOPLE.
AND YES I DO SORT OF ENVY THOSE WHO DIE LIKE DAVID BOWIE BUT I AGGREE THAT THE PROCESS OF DYING CAN BE VERY VERY PAINFUL AND I WOULD LIKE TO AVOID THAT PART OF IT. I HAVE THOUGHT OF SUICIDE UT AS BAD AS MY SUFFERING IS, IT IS PERHAPS NOT QUITE BAD ENOUGH FOR ME TO END MY LIFE. BUT IT'S DAMNED CLOSE!

Would you agree that:
1. The second law of thermodynamics is the Big Rule.
2. Any process that acts in opposition to the the second law of thermodynamics is doomed to fail.
3. A living organism never stops requiring more organization, more order.
4. Disorder will always win.

Jim, I have to thank you for turning me on to Buckethead. I probably would not have paid much attention to him, if I hadn't seen you post his videos on your Twitter feed. I just bought the album Population Override!

Just added Electric Tears to the collection as well.
